Vision

We aim to host an exhibition of Re-Light products in Beijing that will draw up to 100,000 visitors. We aim to sell as many as 10,000 Re-Light products in our online store, from buybacks from backlit film producers and through a distribution network of approximately 30 retail stores in China. Moreover, we intend to reach agreements with backlit film corporations to supply us with used film, which will offset their carbon footprint. Such activities will enable us to build an iconic brand and a nationwide platform for the collection and recycling of backlit advertising film for the sale of light products. Ultimately, we believe that our project will send a powerful message to society about the harmful effects of PVC, the importance of recycling, and the need to formulate imaginative, open-sourced and financially sustainable solutions to critical environmental issues.

What's the project about

According to data from the Beijing Public Transportation Advertising Co., Ltd., bus, subway and railway stations in Beijing annually dispose of more than two million ‘backlit film’ banners used in advertisements on bus shelters, kiosks and stands. These banners are typically made of PVC, a product whose manufacture and disposal pose substantial environmental problems. In an effort to mitigate these hazards, we will collect used backlit advertising film from bus and railway stations in Beijing, and collaborate with a professional design team to repurpose it into fashionable and strikingly-shaped lampshades and other products. Inspired by the Lego toy product, we will publish our designs online in an open-source model and invite members of the public to share their creations on our site. We will host an exhibition of the most elegant of these ‘Re-Light’ products, and sell them online and in shops across China.

E-idea and me

Before participating in the 2011 E-Idea competition, we had difficulties as our idea for environmental protection lacked visibility. However, E-idea has acted as a valuable platform. Also, the online training provided by E-Idea helped us to realize our concept as well as to foster a better understanding of how to run a project.
