Vision

By creating rooftop gardens, we seek to reduce heat, smog and energy consumption as well as promote local food production and enhance the quality of life in Shanghai. By September 30, 2012, we will plant rooftop gardens over an area of about 10,000 square metres in three Shanghai Project neighborhoods. We aim to assemble a network of up to 300 volunteers who will participate in the project, secure three major sponsors and set up a club with a ‘vegetable and fruit bar’ where volunteers and other urban garden enthusiasts can meet. We will assemble a small team of professional V-Roof landscape designers, and hire and train 20-30 gardeners to oversee our rooftop gardens. We are keen to develop our capacity to expand our operations. In the longer term, we aim to create gardens on 200,000-300,000 square meters of rooftops in Shanghai and expand the project to other Chinese cities, turning V-Roof into a successful business.

What's the project about

Our project fits in with the policy of Shanghai’s Municipal Government to promote promotes rooftop gardens. The project is also sponsor-friendly. We have already secured RMB 300,000 in sponsorship from the Shanghai NITA Construction Landscape Company, and are soliciting funds from a number of other prospective partners, including the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, to supplement the assistance provided through E-idea. A property management firm called Shanghai Yidian is providing us with the use of roofs in the Yihong Technology Zone for the first phase of the project, and landscape designers and technology consultants have offered their services. Other partners have pledged to donate seedlings, wood, plant containers and irrigation equipment, while the Shanghai Creative Industry Association will provide space for us to promote our work at the 2011 Shanghai International Creative Industry Festival.

E-idea and me

I learned about E-idea at an event organized by the British Consulate for the 2012 London Olympic Games. I not only applied but recommended this event to many of my friends and colleagues. The four on-line training events held by the British Council in China inspired us. We used the advice to push forward with the implementation of the project, and to make further improvements to optimize our project outline.
