Vision

Our goal is to establish Reusable Bag Centres with more than 7,000 reusable bags in circulation within an area that includes six supermarkets and ten university campuses located inside the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, a higher education zone in suburban Guangzhou. By launching this project in a university district, we hope to influence young people and the leaders of tomorrow by encouraging them to develop lifelong green habits. We also aim to promote sustainability to a wider audience, inspiring others to emulate this example. Our ultimate goal is to expand this project to cover all of Guangzhou, and to promote the use and recycling of reusable shopping bags across a vast metropolitan area.

What's the project about

A nationwide regulation requiring shops to charge customers for plastic bags has educated Chinese consumers to the detrimental environmental impact of such bags and enhanced the popularity of reusable shopping bags. However, plastic bags remain ubiquitous since they are useful and shoppers often forget to bring their own bags to the shops. Moreover, the public still view shopping bags as disposable items, so they typically neglect to clean their reusable bags. Our project seeks to reduce this waste and the related environmental impact by making it easier for shoppers to use and recycle reusable shopping bags. We will set up ‘Reusable Bag Centres’ in high-density traffic areas near supermarkets, housing compounds and university dormitories where we will supply clean, recycled and reusable shopping bags. At these centres, shoppers will be able to obtain free reusable shopping bags and tokens which they can use to exchange their dirty reusable bags for ones that have been cleaned and sterilised. We intend to recycle the bags once a week and sterilise them every two weeks. The project will be carried out in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, a suburb of Guangzhou in which many university campuses are located.

E-idea and me

It is very meaningful to be part of E-idea because of its great role in promoting environmental protection and universal awareness of low carbon living. I feel E-idea not only stimulates creative responses but also encourages young people to shoulder more responsibility in protecting our planet. The earth's resources are limited, so green life issues are a constant theme, and the low carbon economy and sustainable development are important on-going topics.
